Jewelry Care Guide
Proper care extends the life of your jewelry and keeps it looking its best. Here's how to care for your Corey T Works pieces.
General Care Tips
DO:
- Store jewelry separately to prevent scratching (soft pouches or lined boxes)
- Put jewelry on LAST (after perfume, lotion, hairspray)
- Take jewelry off FIRST (before swimming, showering, sleeping, exercising)
- Clean regularly with a soft cloth
- Have pieces inspected annually for loose stones or worn settings
DON'T:
- Expose to harsh chemicals (chlorine, bleach, cleaning products)
- Wear during physical activity or heavy manual work
- Sleep in your jewelry (chains can break, rings can bend)
- Store in humid environments (bathrooms)
Sterling Silver Care
Silver naturally tarnishes (darkens) over time due to exposure to air and moisture. This is normal and easily managed.
To prevent tarnish:
- Store in airtight bags or anti-tarnish pouches
- Wear regularly — oils from your skin help prevent tarnish
- Keep away from rubber bands (sulfur accelerates tarnish)
To clean tarnished silver:
- Use a silver polishing cloth (included with your purchase)
- Gently rub the piece until tarnish is removed
- Buff with a clean section of the cloth for shine
For heavier tarnish:
- Mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap
- Soak piece for 5-10 minutes
- Gently scrub with a soft toothbrush
- Rinse under warm water
- Dry thoroughly with a soft cloth
Avoid: Dip cleaners and ultrasonic cleaners unless the piece has no stones or delicate details.
Gold Care (14k, 18k)
Gold doesn't tarnish like silver but can dull with buildup from lotions, oils, and everyday wear.
Regular cleaning:
- Soak in warm water with mild dish soap for 15-20 minutes
- Gently scrub with a soft toothbrush (especially around settings)
- Rinse under warm running water
- Dry with a soft, lint-free cloth
Professional cleaning: We recommend professional cleaning once a year, or bring it to us.
Rose gold note: Rose gold contains copper and can develop a slightly deeper patina over time. This is normal and considered part of its character.
Caring for Stones
Diamonds:
- Durable but can chip if struck at certain angles
- Clean with soap and water method above
- Safe for ultrasonic cleaning (unless the setting is delicate)
Softer stones (opals, pearls, emeralds, turquoise):
- Do NOT use ultrasonic cleaners
- Avoid soaking — wipe with a damp soft cloth only
- Keep away from heat and chemicals
- Pearls: wipe after wearing to remove body oils
Pavé settings:
- Be gentle — many small stones mean many small settings
- Avoid catching on fabric or hair
- Have settings checked annually
Kinetic Pieces — Special Care
Your kinetic jewelry has moving parts that require a bit of extra attention:
DO:
- Operate mechanisms gently — don't force movement
- Keep clean and dry (moisture can affect bearings)
- Store with mechanisms in resting position if possible
DON'T:
- Expose to sand, dust, or grit (can enter mechanisms)
- Submerge in water (shower, pool, ocean)
- Apply excessive force to moving parts
If movement becomes stiff or gritty:
- Contact us — mechanisms can be cleaned and serviced
- Do NOT attempt to lubricate yourself (wrong lubricants can damage the piece)
Engraved Pieces
Hand-engraved details can trap dirt and oils over time.
To clean:
- Soak in warm soapy water
- Use a very soft brush (baby toothbrush) to gently clean crevices
- Rinse and dry thoroughly
- Buff with a soft cloth
Avoid: Abrasive cloths or polishes on engraved surfaces — they can wear down fine details over time.
Professional Servicing
We recommend professional inspection and cleaning every 12-18 months, especially for:
- Engagement rings and daily-wear pieces
- Pieces with pavé or multiple stone settings
- Kinetic mechanisms
Bring your piece to us or a trusted local jeweler.
Storage Tips
- Individual pouches: Each piece in its own soft pouch prevents scratching
- Anti-tarnish strips: Add to your jewelry box to slow silver tarnish
- Avoid: Direct sunlight (can fade some stones), extreme heat, humidity
- Travel: Use a padded jewelry roll or case — never loose in a bag
